Attachment patterns, made visible

Attachment Style Quiz: how do you respond to closeness?

Explore the two dimensions beneath adult attachment—anxiety and avoidance—and see how they may shape reassurance, independence, conflict, and emotional closeness.

Beyond a single label

Two dimensions can tell a more useful story

Attachment anxiety describes worry about rejection, abandonment, or another person's availability. Attachment avoidance describes discomfort with dependence, vulnerability, or emotional closeness. Because the dimensions are separate, a person can be low or high on either one.

The four familiar attachment styles are best treated as regions on that two-dimensional map—not permanent personality boxes. Your result may sit near a boundary, change with context, or look different in a friendship than in a romantic relationship.

This 16-item Mindset Palette quiz is informed by that dimensional framework, including the ECR-R research tradition, but it is an original educational reflection tool rather than the full validated instrument. Learn more from the ECR-R author's overview.

A thoughtful next step

Use the result as a conversation, not a verdict

Notice the situations that activate your pattern, try one communication script, and observe whether the relationship makes room for consistency, mutual care, boundaries, and repair. If relationship distress feels intense or unsafe, consider support from a qualified professional.

Common questions

Attachment style quiz FAQs

What is an attachment style?

An attachment style is a pattern of expectations and responses around closeness, trust, support, rejection, and independence. Contemporary attachment research often describes adult attachment using two continuous dimensions: attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance.

Is this attachment style quiz a diagnosis?

No. This is an educational self-reflection tool, not a diagnosis, clinical assessment, or substitute for therapy. Its questions are informed by the anxiety-and-avoidance model used in attachment research but do not reproduce the full validated ECR-R questionnaire.

How does the attachment style quiz calculate my result?

Eight questions contribute to an attachment-anxiety average and eight contribute to an attachment-avoidance average. Each axis ranges from 1.0 to 5.0. Scores below 3.0 are mapped as lower and scores of 3.0 or higher as higher for the four-style reflection profile.

Can my attachment style change?

Attachment patterns are not fixed identities. They can vary by relationship and context, and people can develop more secure ways of relating through awareness, supportive relationships, communication practice, and professional help when useful.

Can I take the quiz for friendships instead of romance?

Yes. Before starting, choose romantic relationships, friendships, or general connections. Answer with one context in mind throughout the quiz so the result is easier to interpret.

Are my attachment quiz answers private?

Your answers and result are stored only in your current browser so you can return after refreshing. Mindset Palette does not send the answers to a server or store them in a database.

What does earned secure attachment mean?

Earned security describes more secure relationship capacities developed over time, such as tolerating closeness and independence, communicating needs directly, regulating distress, and choosing relationships that support consistency and repair.
